Students from Saudi Arabia complete engineering program

About 30 students from Jazan University in Saudi Arabia recently completed a summer program at UL Lafayette, where they received engineering instruction and training.

Students learned about structural design, reinforced concrete structures and steel and composite materials during the seven-week Engineering Summer Program for International Students. They also studied English as a second language as part of the program.

鈥淚t serves as an outreach program to the international community, and as a way to recruit highly qualified international undergraduate students who wish to continue with graduate programs,鈥 said Dr. Emad Habib, a professor of civil engineering at UL Lafayette.

Habib and Dr. Matt Fadden, an assistant professor of civil engineering, designed and directed the program. It was coordinated by the Scientific Collaboration Development Center. The company, which is based in Iowa, organizes training and research programs for several universities in other countries.

Other UL Lafayette faculty members who provided instruction during the program included: Dr. Ahmed Khattab, associate professor of industrial technology; Dr. Chris Carroll, assistant professor of civil engineering; and Dr. Mark Honegger, associate professor of English.

The students were given a farewell reception last week at the Alumni Center.
