Morrison to Reign at 2003 Homecoming Queen

Shanea Morrison, 2003 Homecoming Queen for the ÇàÇà²ÝÊÓƵ, and her court will reign over Homecoming activities when Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns take on ULM on Oct. 11.

Morrison will be joined by her court, Robyn Deranger, Sarah James, Katie Ortego and Jami Williams during UL Lafayette’s Homecoming parade and half-time festivities on Oct. 11.

Morrison, a senior majoring in interpersonal and public communication, is currently president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She is a member of the University Program Council, Blue Key Honor Society, Sigma Gamma Mu Communication Honor Society, Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society, Ragin’ Peppers, the Interpersonal Communication Society, Order of Omega Greek Honor Society.

In addition she serves with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Acadiana and is a former Student Government Association senator. Upon graduation, Morrison plans to pursue a master’s of social work degree in hopes of becoming a clinical social worker.

She was nominated for the 2003 Homecoming Court by the University Program Council’s African American Culture Committee. She is the daughter of Purvis and Mary Morrison of Scott.

Robyn Deranger, a senior majoring in biology, is currently serving as president of the Student Government Association. She is also a member of the University Program Council’s Traditions Committee and its’ Spirit Committee.

Deranger is a member of the Association of Future Alumni, Blue Key Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Pre-Professional Society, Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society, STEP Committee, Food Services Committee, Alumni Council, University Organizations Committee and Daughters of Wisdom.

She plans to attend medical school upon graduation. She is the daughter of Lee and Cindy Deranger of Opelousas and was nominated by the Traditions Committee.

Sarah James, a junior majoring in business marketing and legal studies, is in the Honors Program where she has served as Junior Representative and Vice President. In addition, she is a Student Government Association Senator and is on the Public Relations Committee. James serves as International Student Council Representative and Student Advisor to the Dean. She is also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Ragin’ Peppers, Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society and Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.

She is the daughter of A. Gordon James III and Madeline James of New Iberia. James was nominated by the Honors Program.

Katie Ortego, a junior majoring in public relations, is currently President of the College of Liberal Arts in the Student Government Association. She is chairman of the SGA’s Public Relations Committee and is a member of the University Program Council’s Organizations Committee. She is a member of the Blue Key Honor Society, Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society, Sigma Gamma Mu Communications Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Public Relations Student Society of America, Committee on Academic Affairs and Standards, Campus Crusaders for Christ, Ragin’ Peppers.

She is the daughter of Mickey Ortego and Ron Ortego of Lafayette. Ortego was nominated by the Blue Key Honor Society.

Jami Williams, a senior majoring in public relations, is currently serving as treasurer of the Student Government Association. She is a president of Ragin’ Peppers and is a member of the Student Orientation Staff, University Program Council Events Committee, Traditions Committee, Spirit Committee and the Public Relations Student Society of America, where she is vice president for public relations. In addition, she is chairman of the Lyceum Committee and is a member of the Association of Future Alumni.

She is the daughter of Deidre Culhane of Lake Charles. Williams was nominated by the UPC events committee.

Nominees for the Homecoming Court are submitted by campus organizations. The court is chosen by the senior football players after being interviewed by student leaders.
