Meet Alexandra Arcement, chemistry alum

Written byAmanda Burleigh

"In the chemistry program, I learned everything necessary to excel in my field, such as how to safely deal with and dispose of chemicals. I learned how to use various instruments that I now use in my present career and collaborated directly with chemical engineers for critical thinking and troubleshooting."

Where I'm From

I鈥檓 from Laplace and I鈥檝e been passionate about chemistry since high school.

Where I Am

I鈥檓 currently working as a chemistry laboratory technician for Coastal Chemical LLC.

Where I'm Going

I鈥檓 going to continue advancing in my career and promoting women in the STEM fields.

Alexandra Arcement, who earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry () in 2019, said UL Lafayette has fully prepared her for her career.

鈥淭he classes and professors helped me learn what I needed to know to get a position as an analytical chemistry apprentice in a lab,鈥 she said.

Alexandra is currently working as a chemistry laboratory technician for Coastal Chemical LLC.

鈥淚 take a sample that is sent in by various oil companies, and I process it by filtering out any solids and washing them with solvents,鈥 she explained of her day-to-day tasks.

"Some samples can be hazardous or combustible, so all safety precautions are always implemented. Once the samples are processed, I analyze them on our instruments. Once I finish processing the data, I compile a report with my findings to return to the company that sent in the sample.鈥

While in school, Alexandra deepened her education and passion for chemistry by working in both the chemistry and chemical engineering departments.

鈥淚n the chemistry department I learned everything necessary to excel in my field,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 learned how to safely deal with and dispose of chemicals. Also, how to work efficiently and safely in a lab.

"Working in the chemical engineering department under Bill Holmes, I learned how to use various instruments that I now use in my present career. I collaborated directly with chemical engineers for critical thinking and troubleshooting.鈥

Alexandra decided to attend UL Lafayette after attending Preview Day, a recruitment event for high school juniors and seniors to tour the campus and learn more about UL Lafayette.

鈥淚 knew without a doubt that I would be happy at UL Lafayette,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was impressed with the chemistry program and the professors that I met like Dr. Gallo.鈥

Alexandra participated heavily in campus activities including football games, honor society functions, and Sneaux Day.

鈥淭he highlight in my senior year was founding the , an organization for the support and promotion of women in the STEM fields,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 had many good experiences, fond memories, and am proud to be a Ragin鈥 Cajun!鈥
